Jan Scholten — biography and element theory

Jan Scholten is the Dutch homeopath who did for the mineral kingdom what the periodic table did for chemistry: he argued that a remedy's position in the table of elements predicts its homeopathic picture, and used that grid to characterize remedies that had never been proved. His element theory, set out in Homoeopathy and the Elements and extended in Secret Lanthanides and Wonderful Plants, made him one of the three defining methodologists of the post-1990 generation, alongside Rajan Sankaran and Massimo Mangialavori.

Career in brief

Scholten was born in 1951 in the Netherlands and trained as a homeopath there, building a practice in Utrecht and a teaching presence that, by the 1990s, reached an international audience. He publishes through his own foundation, Stichting Alonnissos, which has issued the major works and the digital tools built on them. He belongs to the wave of European methodologists who, after George Vithoulkas's revival, rebuilt prescribing around systematic organizing principles in the 1990s and 2000s.

The method: stages, series, and the predictive grid

Scholten's central move is to treat the periodic table as a map of human developmental themes. Each horizontal series carries a life-domain — the carbon series concerns identity and the body, the silica series concerns relationship and family, the iron series concerns work and task, the silver series concerns performance and ideas, the gold series concerns leadership and power — so a remedy's row tells you the arena of the patient's struggle. Each vertical position, the "stage" (numbered 1 to 18 across the period), tells you where in that arena the patient sits: the early stages are about beginning and impulse, the middle stages about consolidation and doubt, the late stages about decline, loss, and letting go. A mineral remedy's picture, in this model, is the intersection of its series-theme and its stage-position.

The radical claim is predictive. Because the grid is systematic, Scholten argued that the themes of an unproved element could be deduced from its coordinates and then confirmed in the clinic — and he published characterizations of many small and previously obscure mineral remedies on exactly that basis. Secret Lanthanides extended the method to the lanthanide row, which he linked to themes of autonomy, inner direction, and freedom from external control. Wonderful Plants and the associated Plant Theory then carried an analogous coordinate logic — clades and phases — into the plant kingdom, producing a botanical classification system that runs parallel to, and competes with, Sankaran's plant families.

The works are cumulative and increasingly systematic, which is both the method's strength and the source of its sharpest professional discussion: the later a remedy's deduction sits in the system, the more it depends on the grid's internal logic rather than on proving data. Scholten's own framing is that the deductions are hypotheses for clinical confirmation, not finished materia medica.

From group analysis to the full grid

The system did not arrive whole. Scholten's first book, Homoeopathy and Minerals, worked by "group analysis": rather than deduce a remedy from coordinates, he compared the known pictures of related salts — the natrums, the kalis, the calcareas, the various muriaticums and phosphoricums — and extracted the theme each cation and each anion contributed. A remedy such as Kali carbonicum can then be read as the kali theme (duty, rigidity, the support of family and structure) crossed with the carbon theme (identity and worth), and the method's predictive power came from being able to fill in a salt whose picture was thin by combining two themes that were well established. Homoeopathy and the Elements generalized this from salts to the elements themselves, replacing the ad-hoc group themes with the systematic series-and-stage grid; the step from comparison to deduction is what both made the method powerful and exposed it to its central professional discussion.

Scholten's clinical workflow follows the grid. The practitioner locates the patient's life-domain (the series) from the arena of the chief complaint and self-presentation, then reads the stage from where the patient sits within that arena — beginning, struggling, consolidating, declining, or letting go — and names the element at that intersection before confirming it against whatever proving or clinical material exists. For salts and plant remedies the same two-axis logic applies with an added coordinate. The discipline of the method is that the coordinates must be argued from the case, not retrofitted to a remedy the prescriber already favors — a safeguard easier to state than to enforce.

Traditional indications

Within the Scholten system, the practitioner's guide to any mineral remedy begins with two coordinates. The series locates the arena: a patient in the gold series presents struggles centred on power, authority, and public responsibility; a patient in the iron series presents around duty, task, and competence; one in the silica series around relationship, family, and belonging. The stage locates the phase: stage 3 or 4 indicates an impulse still forming, stage 10 or 11 a peak of tension and consolidation, stage 17 or 18 a picture of withdrawal and ending. The combination yields the indicated mineral: Aurum (gold series, stage 11) is the leading remedy for the isolated, overburdened authority figure, consistent with its well-established proving picture of depression, self-reproach, and cardiovascular involvement — and acute suicidal ideation in such a case is a red-flag presentation needing prompt assessment alongside the prescription. The lanthanide row adds a third dimension: each lanthanide is indicated where the autonomy and self-direction theme overlays the series and stage.

For plant prescribing under the Plant Theory, the two coordinates are the botanical order or family (which carries the thematic content, analogous to the series) and the phase (analogous to the stage). A remedy from the Solanaceae, for example, falls in the family associated with shock, fright, and sudden transitions; its phase in the case orients the prescriber toward the specific expression. The model is applied alongside classical totality analysis and modality assessment, not as a replacement for it.

Reception and critique within the tradition

Two discussions dominate professional circles. The first is the deduction problem: a remedy picture inferred from a table coordinate, however elegant, is not the same epistemic object as a picture built from a systematic proving, and a portion of Scholten's materia medica is deduced rather than proved. The method's defenders answer that clinical confirmation closes the gap; its critics answer that confirmation by uncontrolled case observation is the weak link in any new remedy characterization. The second is over-systematization: the grid is so generative that almost any patient can be placed somewhere on it, which raises the question of what case the system would rule out. Within the broader practitioner tradition Scholten's deduced remedy pictures sit as a distinct, lower-confidence band, and the deduction is worth flagging explicitly wherever it matters clinically.

Element theory inside 2026 software

Scholten's system is among the most software-friendly of the contemporary methods precisely because it is a grid: the series-and-stage coordinates, the lanthanide themes, and the plant clades all encode cleanly into structured data, and Scholten's own digital tools (the Q-Rep / Qjure lineage) were built to query exactly that structure. The working pattern is two layers — a Scholten-aware tool for the periodic-table and plant classifications, and a general repertory for classical totality analysis and case management. The useful audit is to run a current case both ways and see where the element deduction and the repertorized totality agree; the classical side is what you can drive from a searchable repertory and materia medica.

Verdict

Scholten is the contemporary generation's structuralist: the author who mapped the mineral kingdom onto the periodic table, extended the logic to the lanthanides and the plants, and turned the whole grid into queryable software. Read Homoeopathy and the Elements for the model's power and internal coherence, and hold the predictive claim and the deduced remedy pictures at arm's length as clinical hypotheses rather than proved findings — applying them alongside, not instead of, case totality and classical materia medica.
